Michael Richardo Phillips was born July 14, 1968, to the Rev. Paul and Dorothy Culver Phillips. He was their only child born to their union. Growing up in a family of faith, Michael accepted Christ at an early age at Shady Grove A.M.E. Church.
Michael had a rich childhood filled with close friends, loving adults and supportive community members committed to children’s growth and development. As a young man growing up in Elba, Michael was always known for his athletic ability in football and basketball at Elba High School and his penchant for style which was shown through his vehicles, clothing and general lifestyle. Michael, known by friends and family as Mick or Mike, possessed a charismatic personality which was driven by knowledge, excellence, courtesy and standards.
He married his high school sweetheart and beloved wife Tammy Terrell Williams, and through their union they had one daughter, Shallis Arman Phillips. Theirs was a household filled with joy, laughter, a focus on education and a devotion to God.
After leaving Elba, Michael studied at The University of Alabama and later entered the U.S. Air Force, where he served honorably for a number of years. His education and training led him to a career in technology and his most recent professional experience was at Comcast as a quality assurance engineer.
Michael loved the Lord and was a faithful servant to the end. Michael also deeply loved his family, who were his top priority after God. He found joy in cooking, grilling and baking for his family and friends. A sportsman, Michael took pleasure in playing golf and watching athletic events, particularly University of Alabama football games.
Michael was proceeded in death by his paternal grandparents John Frank and Julia Phillips, of Elba, Alabama; maternal grandfather, Charlie Clifton Culver, of Elba, Alabama; and special cousin, Dominique Danielle Daniels.
He leaves to cherish his memory his best friend and beloved wife, Tammy Terrell Phillips, of Mableton, Georgia; daughter, Shallis Arman Phillips Strickland (Jarred), of Smyrna, Georgia; granddaughter, Taylor Amara Strickland, of Smyrna, Georgia; parents, Paul and Dorothy Phillips of Enterprise, Alabama; grandmother, Rushia Culver, of Elba, Alabama; mother-in-law, Edwina Williams of Elba, Alabama; a father-in-law Robert Earl Williams, of Elba, Alabama; sister-in-law, Cresandra W. Smothers (Kenneth), of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; aunts, Helen Culver of Elba, Alabama; Margaret Daniels (Clinton), of Enterprise, Alabama; and Helen Phillips (the late Frank Jr.), of Elba, Alabama.
Michael also leaves behind a host of loving cousins, friends and other relatives.
