Margrate Newson was born on November 11, 1933 to the late Mildrie Bell Mincy and Elige Mincy, in Bullock County, Alabama, the oldest of five children, all preceded her in death. She grew up in Pike County, where she was joined in union of marriage to the late Henry McKinney and bore seven children. She later married Roy Newson, who also preceded her in death. In all times of her life, she was dedicated to the Lord, beginning her spiritual journey at Lily Hill Baptist Church, Pike County, and later, upon moving to Enterprise, at Adams Street Church of Christ. She was faithful to God and raised her children, likewise, never missing services, Sunday mornings and evenings, and Wednesday nights. She also attended revivals and fellowships, and was well known for her delicious food like collard greens and chicken dressing. She also baked cakes, famous for her Lane and Coconut Cakes. She was a hard worker, working initially at Fleming Cleaners, and later at Alatex shirt factory.
