On Tuesday, December 3, 2019 Maelis Alexander, loving mother of two passed away at the age of ninety. Maelis was born on January 2, 1929 in New Brockton, Alabama to Ilaray Bass and Oscar Darby. She graduated Elba High School in 1946. She had a passion for cosmetology and aspired to be a hair stylist. She moved to Poughkeepsie, New York in 1955. She attended cosmetology school and graduated. While working in a salon Maelis met Booker Alexander in 1957. They fell in love and raised two children Terry and Denise. Maelis decided to end her career the workforce after spending 20 years as a receptionist at the Rain Home Attendant Services in the Bronx. Upon retirement she moved back to Alabama where she would spend her final days. Maelis was known for her candor. She spoke her mind whether you liked it or not. She was an avid reader and was fond of the beach. Shopping was one of her favorite pass times as well as getting dressed up . She was a stylish classy woman. Maelis was preceded in death by her mother, Ilaray, father Oscar, and brother Martin. She is survived by her two children, five grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, one great- great grandson, and a host of cousins and friends. She will be missed by all!
