Lee Ervin Dees was born on April 17, 1940, in Enterprise, AL, to Florence Baxter and Shelley Dees.
Since the age of nine, he was a faithful member of St. Beulah Missionary Baptist Church, where he served on the Board of Trustees for many years.
Lee married his high school sweetheart, Alzie Smith, and their 65-year union produced three children, four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
At just 15 years old, Lee enlisted in the Army reserves. Upon graduating from high school, he entered active duty and served two tours of duty in the Vietnam War, as well as being stationed in Germany on three occasions and once in Japan. Over the course of his distinguished 26-year career, Lee rose through the ranks, promoted to the esteemed rank of E-9 and the title Command Sergeant Major. Following his retirement from active duty, he provided 15 years of meritorious service to the soldiers and officers of the 1-212th Aviation Regiment, leaving a legacy of excellence in service to his nation when he retired from civil service in 2001.
Lee is preceded in death by his daughter, Tequila Dees. father, Shelley Dees; his mother, Florence Baxter Dees; his sister, Katherine Whitehurst.
Lee is survived by his loving wife, Alzie Dees; son, A. Jerome Dees (Terry); daughter, Deborah Bailey (Earl); grandson, A. Jerome Dees II; granddaughters, Michelle Bailey Gavin (James), Jasmine Bailey, A. Joy Dees; great niece, Lena Dees; great nephew, Joseph Dees; and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express our deepest gratitude for the many acts of kindness, love, and support shown to us during this difficult time. Your comforting words, prayers, visits, and expressions of sympathy have brought us great comfort and strength.
A special thank you is extended to the medical team of Zakina “Z” and Jess, who cared for Lee with love and compassion. Your thoughtfulness and care will never be forgotten.
