Life & Legacy of Reverend Joseph Ellington III

Reverend Joseph Ellington III

(May 28, 1949 – August 1, 2025)

Reverend Joseph Ellington III was born on May 28, 1949, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to the late Joseph Ellington Jr. and Eva Ellington. From a very early age, he openly affirmed, worshipped, and abided in Jesus Christ—a devotion that remained steadfast until his untimely passing.

He received his early education in the Tuscaloosa City Schools and graduated from Druid High School in 1967. Reverend Ellington earned a degree in Business Administration and Accounting from Alabama State University, which served him well during his 37-year career with the Alabama Department of Public Health. From 1972 to 2009, he faithfully served as the Director of Infectious Diseases for eight counties.

In addition to his professional career, Reverend Ellington devoted 30 years to pastoral service within the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. His ministry was marked by dedication, vision, and a tireless commitment to improving both the spiritual and physical life of the churches he served.

Reverend Ellington was also deeply involved in his community. He was a dedicated member of the New IDEA Lodge No. 315 in Andalusia, Alabama, and became a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, Beta Upsilon Chapter, seated at Alabama State University in 1969.

On August 15, 1970, Reverend Ellington was united in holy matrimony to Gloria Parmer Ellington. Together, they shared 55 wonderful years of marriage. Their union was blessed with two beloved children, Derek and Angela, who were raised in a home filled with faith, love, and the example of service to God and others.
