Joseph Edwards

Joseph “Benny Boy” Edwards Sr., a devoted father, brother, uncle, coach, and faithful servant of God, was the 12th of 16 kids born to the late Bishop Edwards Sr. and Mittie B. Edwards on January 2, 1962, in Opp, Alabama. He peacefully transitioned from this life on January 16, 2026.

Joseph was raised in Opp, Alabama, where his humor, generosity, and genuine ability to make others feel valued became defining traits of his life. He graduated from Kinston High School in 1980 and earned a basketball scholarship to Lomax-Hannon Junior College in Greenville, Alabama, where he was an attendee. 

At an early age, he joined Bethlehem Baptist Church and later moved his membership to Oak Grove Baptist Church, where his spiritual foundation was nurtured. In 1990, Joseph gave his life to Christ, a decision that shaped the remainder of his life. He faithfully served as Pastor of Morning Star MBC  from 2001 to 2015 and, at the time of his earthly departure, was serving as Pastor of Antioch MBC in Andalusia, Alabama. His faith, forgiveness, and compassion were evident in both his ministry and daily walk.

For 26 years, Joseph dedicated himself to coaching girls’ and boys’ basketball in Georgiana, Alabama. Affectionately known as “Coach Shrek,” he was more than a coach—he was a mentor, leader, and source of encouragement, shaping young lives both on and off the court.

Joseph is preceded in death by his siblings: Mittie Jewel “Sister” Edwards, Willie Merle ”Weeda” Edwards, Carrie “Polly” Austin, William ”Buck” Edwards, Charles Edwards, Larry Edwards, Robert Edwards, and Ed Kellum. God Brother: Bennet Echol.

Family was central to Joseph’s life. He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved children: Jacoby Edwards, Joseph Edwards Jr., and JaTisha Edwards; and his grandchildren: Erik Matthews, Jordan Stallworth, JaKahrie Robinson, Jalicia Edwards, Ja’Zhai Edwards, Jalil Edwards, Lavella Victoria Marie McAdams, Isaac Tunstall Jr., and Jakory Tunstall. His siblings also survive him: brothers James (Pat), Bishop, Willie Joe, Carlton Edwards, Johnny Calvin (Grace) Edwards, and Steve Phillips; sisters Susan Marshall, Peggy Edwards, and Julia (Gary) Crittenden; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, church members, former players, fellow coaches, officials, and lifelong friends.

Special children who held a cherished place in his heart include Ashlee (Co-Chief) Hawkins, Alikeyuntai (Boo) Pate, Carter Mitchell, and the late Jeffery Edwards.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Jules, Nurse Jess (KiKi), and caregivers Onchelle Crittenden, Regina King, Pam Mitchell, Larry Stanford, and Robert Teague for their compassionate care.

Joseph was known for his kind heart, his willingness to help anyone, and his unique ability to make every cousin feel like the favorite. He lived a life filled with purpose, humor, competitiveness, and unwavering faith. While we grieve his earthly absence, we rejoice in knowing he is at rest with the Lord.
