James Hooks Obituary

James “Pop” Hooks Jr. was born on July 29, 1935, as the firstborn son of

the late James William and Mary Alice Hooks.

At an early age, James joined Rocky Head Missionary Baptist Church in Elba, Alabama. Later in life, he became a member of Nazareth Baptist Church and New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, both in Opp, Alabama. He served these churches with humble reverence as a Deacon, Layman, and Usher. His faith remained his North Star through all of life’s seasons.

James was a majestic soul with a heart of gold and gaint spirit. His life was a masterpiece of love, faith, and service. He dedicated more than 40 years of craftsmanship at Dorsey Trailers. Beyond his career, he touched lives as a peewee football coach with a father’s heart, teaching life lessons that reached far beyond the game. He brought harmony to the community as a devoted Band Booster, sharing music as a gift to uplift others. He also served as City Pool Supervisor, overseeing lifeguards and operations with care and dedication.

In quiet moments, James found solace in fishing, patiently awaiting the perfect catch—a reflection of his appreciation for life’s simple beauty.

In November 1995, James united in holy matrimony with Mary Lou Hooks. For 29 blessed years, they shared a life of unwavering devotion, unrelenting passion, and unshakeable love that inspired generations.

He was preceded in death by three of his children, Melvin Hooks, Ron Christopher Hooks and Ray Richardson, as well as three siblings: Ruby Johnson, William “Ed” Hooks, and Estella Hooks.

Left to celebrate his memory are his children: Katerene (Jacquelun) Pierre, Milton Hooks, James “Danny” Hooks, and Tom (Linda) Hooks—whose lives he masterfully wove with wisdom, discipline, and unconditional love.

He is also survived by his siblings: Charles Hooks, Willie “it Scoochie” (Trish) Hooks, Joel (Janice) Hooks, Robert (Annette) Hooks, Jerry (Arleen) Hooks, and Susie Hooks-Goins. A special aunt: Corene Daniels and a sister in law: Gladys Hooks.

His beloved grandchildren include: Shawn “Derek” (Jennifer) Thomas, Cordel (Tiarra) Hooks, William “Junior” (Ashley) Hooks, Joshua Richardson, Cordeshia (Channing) Morris—and countless great-grandchildren.

A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and cherished friends also remain to celebrate his life and carry forward his remarkable legacy.
