J B Cox

J.B. Cox was born on February 7th, 1925, to the late Pink Cox and Hattie Streeter. At 18 months old J.B. was given to his late paternal grandparents George and Emma Cox who reared, loved, protected and molded him into the man he would become. In 1944 at the ripe age of 19 years-old J.B. was drafted into the United States Army/Air Force where he would begin a tour by ship to Italy, performing his duties in World War II. To his surprise he enjoyed eating and mingling with the Italian soldiers. 

J.B. would return to a segregated south on his birthday in 1946. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army/Air Force with the rank of Private First Class. The United States bestowed upon J.B. The World War II Victory Medal and European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 1 Bronze Star. Upon returning, J.B. tried various occupations, but the one he would spend his days performing was working at the sawmill.

On April 17th, 1963, J.B. married the love of his life Juanita Sams Cox. They remained married until Juanita’s death on May 10th, 2012. 

J.B. was preceded in death by his wife, mother, father, grandparents, and brothers (William Fletcher Cox, Johnny Pink Cox, Joe Louis Cox and Fletcher Caldwell) brother in laws (S.T. Sams Jr. and CW Sams).

J.B. leaves an abundance of memories, stories, and jokes to cherish his five children Betty J. Toney (Charlie Toney (Deceased) Andalusia, Ala), Pekoula Cox (Atlanta, Ga), Patricia L. Reynolds (Leslie Reynolds (Deceased), Atlanta, Ga), Louvella J. Folmar (Larry, Elba, Ala), James L. Cox (Iola, Livingston, Ala). 16 grandchildren, 15 plus great-grandchildren, and a host of great-great-grandchildren. Two brothers George J. Cox and Johnny M. Cox both of Chicago IL. One sister Dorothy Martin of Chicago IL. One sister-in-law Murdie B. Sams Brantley, Ala. A special and devoted cousin Alberta Walker. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

The family of Mr. J.B. Cox would also like to extend a special heartfelt thank-you to the following: Gentiva Hospice for playing a major role in ensuring Pawpaw was comfortable up to his final days. Martha Foster, who was a God sent angel who not only provided Pawpaw’s personal care but also talked and listened to his stories/jokes. Mrs. Foster also humbled herself and became a true rock and listening ear to his caregiver Louvella.
