Frederick Newby Obituary

Mr. Frederick Douglas Newby was born in Newville, Alabama on December 31, 1920 to the late Reverend Carl Q. Newby and Ossie (Weems) Newby.  On January 9, 2023, surrounded by family and friends, Mr. Newby entered into eternal life.  At the time of his death, Mr. Newby was 102 and the oldest living veteran in the city of Enterprise.

Frederick Newby was the husband of the late Catherine Newby; they were united in marriage on May 9, 1942.  Frederick and Catherine had two children who preceded him in death, Freddie Jean Grady and Alfred E. Newby.

Frederick Douglas Newby was drafted into the Army in 1942. He served his country willingly and was quoted as saying, “I thought it was my patriotic duty for me to serve, so I did my best at whatever I was assigned.” Mr. Newby served 30 months overseas during World War II.
In 1945, Frederick was honorably discharged and went to Enterprise to start a life with his wife, the late Catherine Newby. When Mr. Newby came to Enterprise he started working at Sessions Peanut Company before going to work at Fort Rucker as a cook until he retired.

Mr. Newby was a member of the St. Beulah Baptist Church of Enterprise, Alabama.

Mr. Newby was a man of many talents. He taught himself how to lay bricks perfectly and built many additions onto his home by himself. He loved to farm and shared his expertise with others to help their farms flourish. He also loved to repair his cars and had many blue mechanical coveralls to show for it. Mr. Newby loved to read to learn new ideas and skills. He often had books in his hand and always wanted to share a plethora of knowledge that he obtained. He was also an avid storyteller and loved to share stories from his past adventures, military experiences and childhood.

All of Mr. Newby’s siblings preceded him in death: Alvin D. Newby, Clarence R. Newby, Sarah L. Stoney, Carl Q. Newby, Jr, and Samuel J. Newby. Mr. Newby is survived by his four granddaughters, Cassandra Renee Grady Youngblood of Brentwood, California, Cheryl Yvette Grady of Frederick, Maryland, Natalee Christine Newby and Courtney Nicole Newby both of Providence, Rhode Island as well as a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
