Estella Rodgers Lawrence, affectionately known as “Big Mama” was born on December 1, 1932, as the eldest child of the late Lemon and Nancy Rodgers. Having lost her mother at an early age, Estella quickly matured into a nurturing, responsible, and caring older sister to her eight siblings. At 19 years old, Estella was united in holy matrimony to Marvin “MC” Lawrence on November 20, 1941. The two were lifelong companions and their union was blessed with seven children.
In the midst of her dedication and commitment to her family, Estella gave her life to Christ and a newfound faith and reliance on God, helped her to endure. She became an active member of Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where she was known as an avid Bible reader and where she continued to love and serve the Lord until He called her home. On October 25, 2022, Big Mama received her heavenly home, to experience her eternal rest and to be adorned in her glorious crown.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, MC; her dedicated son, Marvin and loving grandson Costellus. Those left to cherish her memories include children: John (Carolyn) Lawrence of Elba, AL; Ralph (Paula) Lawrence of Jacksonville, NC; Pamela (John*) Mitchell of Elba, AL; Patricia (Larry) Doughty of Tuscaloosa, AL; Robin Lawrence of Albany ,GA; Nancy Lawrence of Montgomery, AL; daughter-in-law, Linda Lawrence of Tacoma, WA; six siblings, seventeen grandchildren and a host of great-grands, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Special neighbor and friend Willie and Johnnie McBride.
