Derry Darnell Shambley was born May 28, 1954 to thelate Henry Anderson and Katie Mae Hubbard Shambley. Derry is the third of six siblings. He married the love of his life, Joy Ann Anderson Shambley in 1985, who preceded him in death in March 2014. To this union two children were born, Derry Dexter and Joy Elizabeth.
Derry confessed his love for Christ at an early age, August 6, 1967, under the leadership of Pastor W. D. Billups at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, Tuscaloosa, AL. When he relocated to Enterprise, AL, he and his family became members of Pleasant Shade Missionary Baptist Church.
Derry grew up in Tuscaloosa, Alabama in the Stillman Hill – West End part of town. He graduated from Druid High School, Tuscaloosa, AL, Class of 1973. He was an outstanding basketball player and was aPoint Guard on the Druid High School Basketball Championship Team. Upon his high school graduation in 1973, he attended the University of Alabama (UA)and graduated in 1978 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in General Studies from New College. While at theUA, he became an undrafted team member of the Junior Varsity Basketball Team as a walk-on; was in the US Air Force ROTC; and was Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the US Air Force. After serving more than 3 years as an Army Reserve Officer, he obtained an inter-service transfer to the US Army Reserves. Derry served honorably for more than 26 years and retired as a Major, USAR, Infantry Branch.
Derry also retired from the State of Alabama, Houston County Mental Health, as a Caseworker. After thisretirement, he became involved in his own business, Shambley and Son General Contractors Company. He loved repairing houses, his birds, his plants, and proudly as a die-hard Alabama football fan. He attended all home games until this past year due to his illness.
Derry was well known in his community as a good neighbor. He loved people and sharing his knowledge. He leaves to mourn and cherish his memories: his son-Derry Dexter of Indiana and daughter-Joy Elizabeth Shambley of Enterprise, AL ; two granddaughters-Alyanna and Alees of Enterprise, AL; five siblings: Shuryvonne Shambley Dixon ofTuscaloosa, AL; Dr. Harold Shambley(Joyce) of Mitchellville, MD; Patricia Shambley of Tuscaloosa, AL; Lester J. Shambley of Anniston, AL and Stanley(Beverly) of Tuscaloosa, AL; a host of nephews, nieces, uncles, aunts, and cousins.
