Clauzell Elliard was born to Claude and Willie Mae Robbins Elliard on May 22,
1939, in Owassa, Alabama, near the Conecuh County seat of Evergreen. The Elliard fami
ly moved to Elba when he was a young boy. He attended Elba Colored School and Mul
berry Heights High School, where he played basketball and graduated in 1957. He entered
the United States Army, served briefly, and was medically discharged. After his military
service, he lived in Mount Dora, Florida.
He returned to Elba and married JoAnn McGowan on May 23, 1961. After their
marriage, he joined New Zion Missionary Baptist Church, but he had been baptized earlier
at Elba Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Clauzell and JoAnn had five children: Natalie
Trese, Maurice, Tierney LaVonya, Marsha Lynn, and Maria Faye.
Clauzell was also one of five children, including Jessie, Willie George, Annie Jean,
and Nona. He was raised with strong family values and a reverence for Jesus Christ. He
loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, farming, raising horses and other animals, and had a
passion for birds, including chickens and quails. His garden was the envy of many and
provided food for the hungry. Always a hard worker, Clauzell worked alongside his wife
in the hotel industry in New Hampshire and Florida and was employed by Dorsey Trailers
in Elba for over three decades as a painter and supervisor. He retired after 37 years of
faithful service. He also served in the Elba Volunteer Fire Department.
