Bishop Fleming Jr. Obituary

Bishop Fleming Jr., age 93, of Enterprise, Alabama (Coffee County), entered eternal rest on May 28, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of faith, wisdom, and enduring love. Born in Enterprise to the late Bishop Fleming Sr. and Universy Pouncey Fleming. He was raised in a God’ fearing home filled with strength, grace, and purpose. He graduated from Coppinville Training School, where he developed a love for learning and enjoyed playing football.

After graduation, he worked with his father before being drafted into the United States Army, where he served honorably during the Korean War. For his courage, he received the Bronze Star with Valor, a testament of his bravery and combat strength. He was employed for 25 years at Sikorsky Aircraft, which later became DynCorp, where he continued to work for over 10 more years before retiring.

His spiritual foundation remained firm throughout his life. He was baptized at an early age and was a lifelong member of New Zion AME. He faithfully served as a deacon at both Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church and Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church, always ready with a prayer, a helping hand, and a word of guidance.

He was united in holy matrimony to the love of his life, Janary Donaldson Fleming, and together they shared 62 years of devoted marriage. They raised eight of his ten children in a home rooted in faith, love, and discipline. A home that he had built from the ground up, for his family.

He was also a passionate gardener and farmer, tending a large garden and livestock for many years, giving back to the earth and to those around him.

In his younger days, he was part of a gospel quartet, and music remained close to his heart. He often sang with his wife, children, grandchildren, friends, and extended family, turning ordinary days into moments of praise. Bishop Jr. had a love for music all of his life and had many favorite songs like “A Charge to Keep I Have”, “Father I Stretch My Hands to Thee”, “Near the Cross”, “I Heard the Angels Singing”, and “Run on for A Long Time”.

Bishop Jr. was a man of much steady wisdom, often sharing simple, powerful truths. When asked how he was doing, he’d say: “I’m on top of the dirt, it isn’t on me, Lord, I Thank You”! And when offering advice: “That’s your little red wagon; you can either push it or pull it.”

Bishop Jr. was preceded in death by his Parents, Bishop Fleming Sr, Universy Fleming, His loving wife Janary D. Fleming, his cherished youngest daughter, Eunice “Peggy” Fleming and his devoted grandson, Heba Shipman.

He leaves to cherish in his memory, his loving children: Larry Shipman (Gloria), Linda Newton (Harold), Edna Wilson (Thomas), Kenith Shipman (Margaret), Charles Fleming (Catherine), Bertha D. Fleming Pope, Milton Shipman (Michelle), Reginold Fleming (Cynthia) and Steve Bishop Fleming. His only sister: Ernestine White, widow of the late Hoover White and his nephews Harold, Everett and niece Kathy White. He is also survived by his many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, including his great-grandson Bishop Fleming V (“B5”) to continue his family name, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, church family, and dear friends.

Bishop Fleming Jr, a long life, well lived and deeply loved. A life rooted in God, family, music, and service. Though he now rests, his legacy will continue in every life he helped to shape, heart he nurtured and every seed he helped to grow and strengthen. Now that it’s all over, He shall wear a crown. No more pain, No more labor, No more tears. He’s laid down his burdens, folded his hands in rest, and stepped into Glory. The Robe is His, The Crown is His, the song is His and The Faithful Servant has Finished His Race. “Well done, good and faithful servant. Thou hast been faithful over a few things; I will make thee ruler over many things. Enter thou into the joy of the lord.’ (Matthew 25:23)
