Obituary
Bernest "Toe" Brooks was born September 23, 1924, the fourth child born to Oscar Brooks Senior and Nancy Robinson-Brooks. He was preceded in death by five siblings; Leavy May Brooks, Jack Brooks, Earleon Brooks, Hattie Brooks-Allen and Oscar Brooks Jr.
At a young age, Bernest Brooks became a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church where he served as Sunday school teacher and church clerk. Later his membership moved to St. Beulah Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and Sunday school teacher and Bethany Baptist Church where he served as Sunday school teacher.
Early education and high school for Bernest Brooks was completed at Coffee County Training School. After high school he joined the United States Marines and completed his three-year tour of duty. After his military service, he matriculated at Tuskegee Institute later transferring to Alabama State Teacher's College where he attained his BS degree in Political Science. He went on to pursue a Master's degree in Urban and Regional Planning at Alabama A&M College as well as post-graduate work at Rutgers University and Syracuse University.
Bernest "Toe" Brooks was employed as an educator in Elba, New Brockton and Daleville public school systems. He later worked for the state of Alabama Commission on Aging as an Urban and Regional Planning. His professional career ended as a community servant, serving as a Coffee County Commissioner.
In retirement "Toe" Brooks enjoyed farming and working Mrs. Bea's vegetable stand. However, his job was more of a socializer to those who stopped by than a seller of the goods. He also enjoyed fishing and raised his sons and their friends to fish, hunt and camp. Annual cruises became a favorite pass time with Beatrice and their many friends over the years. They also loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Bernest and Abbie Beatrice Agnew met at Alabama State Teacher's College and was married across the state line of Mississippi, in 1952. To this union, four children were born; Gregory Andrea Brooks, Daleville, Alabama (deceased), Deborah Ardell Brooks-Crum (Ellis), Constance Denice Brooks-West (Mark) and Timothy DeMarcus Brooks (Stephanie Lumford), grandchildren Veronica Lanett Weaver-Rivers, Iyalana Brooks West and Adriana Brooks West.
