Barbara Hooks Obituary

Mother Barbara A. Hooks was born on February 12, 1948, to the late Mr. Harold V. Taylor Sr. and Mrs. Ida V. Brown in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania where she attended Westinghouse High School and The University of Pittsburgh and studied Communication. Mother Hooks has been a songstress and activist in the church since the age of 4 years old where she attended Congregational Church of God In Christ on Upland Street. In the 1970’s Mother Hooks was one of the co-founders of Freedom Temple Church of God In Christ. In 1989 she moved to St. Louis Missouri. An active member and affiliate of the Church of God in Christ from 1952 until she transitioned to Glory. In 1989 Mother Hooks joined Williams Temple Church of God In Christ under the leadership of General Board Member Bishop Lawrence M. Wooten, Pastor. In 2001 Mother Hooks married Pastor Ronny Hooks who survives his wife. 

Pastor and Mother Hooks attended Williams Temple Church of God In Christ until 2015 when he was elevated to Assistant Pastor and she was elevated to The Mother’s Board at El Bethel Church of God in Christ where they served under Bishop Nelson Watts Jr. The Hooks transitioned into their ministry Word of Life John 1:14 in 2020. Mother Hooks was active in multiple ministries: First Lady, Lead Scribe National Prayer Line, Choir Leader and Director, Missionary, Outreach Ministry, Foster parent, Home and Foreign Mission, Praiser and, Children’s Sunday School Teacher.

 

Mother Hooks legacy will be cherished by her husband Pastor Ronny Hooks, one daughter Donna Jones, one son Dexter Henderson; one sister Linda Jo Jackson-Johnson (Christie); five brothers: Harold “Vernon” Taylor Jr. (Edna), Percy Hooks (Robin), Gregory Hooks (Victoria) and Lavelle Hooks; one Grandson John A. Edison (LaKieshia); one grand-daughter Kiandra Batts: three Aunts Myrtle Alexander, Bessie Inglehart and Doris Smith, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters, God-children,  spiritual children, sisters bound by love, church family and friends.
