Hazel Covington Obituary

In lieu of floral arrangements, please donate to Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church Youth Department.

Hazel Mae Covington was born January 12, 1927 in rural Dale County, Alabama to the late Tommy Lee Green and Mattie Clyde Green Vickers. She received Christ at an early age and joined the Shady Grove Baptist Church. Later in life she joined Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where she maintained membership until her death.

She attended elementary school in a one room school house at Shady Grove in Dale County, Alabama. Her secondary education was completed at the Coffee County Training School in 1954. During her secondary school experience Hazel became a sports enthusiast and boasted about being an invaluable player for the girls basketball team. Listen carefully and you might be able to hear a faint echo of her “Baby, I was unstoppable”.

Hazel worked at the Snow White Laundry and Cleaners, Session Cleaners, and was the head cook at the Enterprise Hospital for approximately 20 years. During her employment with the hospital she enrolled in Enterprise State Jr. College where she completed a certification program in Nutrition Science.

Hazel’s marriage to the late Roosevelt Covington ended after approximately 20 years. During the marriage, four children were born. Hazel enjoyed her precious friendships and ongoing support from her neighbors. Her steadfast faith in God made her life difficulties stepping stones. She tried earnestly to instill in her children the way to confront the challenges of life “Let go and let God”.

Hazel leaves to cherish her memory, a loving and devoted daughter; Waverlyn (Jay) of Atlanta, GA, three loving and devoted sons; Tommy Charles of Enterprise, AL, Johnny (Wilanie) of Enterprise, AL, Roderick  (Carol) of Enterprise, AL, eighteen grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and host of other relatives and friends.
